Biographies for Kids

Biographies have always been a highlight in our homeschool. They’re the perfect jumping board for new questions, projects, and further reading. Learning feels more integrated with a biography as a base because it helps naturally connect historical events, social issues, and geography all while feeling relatable and relevant. What kid doesn’t love hearing what it was like when other people (especially famous people) were younger? The stories always provide loads of perspective and inspiration, and I learn something new too! The added pictures and graphics in these kid-friendly biographies help break up the text and reduce overwhelm for younger readers.

Our obsession with biographies really started with the Who Was? series from the library. My oldest son picked up a couple when he was about 8 years old they quickly became our go-to read alouds. They’re quick reads (can easily finish the book within 2 bedtime sessions) and because I’m a non-fiction junky, I’m never too tired to read one more chapter! They’re a perfect bridge as kids graduate from endless picture books at night too!

We got lucky a few years ago and found many of the Who Was series on Audible for only $2-$3, so we now have about twenty Who Was titles in our Audible library. They’re fantastic to listen to while in the car, eating lunch, or even at bed-time if you’re not able to physically read aloud.

My kids were thrilled when The Who Was? Show launched their first season on Netflixin 2018. It’s entertaining to see fresh voices bring some of the most famous names in history to life. Basically a live-action sketch comedy show based on the book series! I recommend reading the books highlighted in the episode(s) first to appreciate the fullness of the quirky skits.

If lesson plans and activity sheets are your thing, check out the Who HQ for more resources! There’s a whole section on their site for educators.
The Waldock Way also has Unit Studies based on the Who Was series. Check them out here.
