Easy Homemade Hot Chocolate

Homemade hot chocolate is a cold-weather staple in our house. We’ve been using Martha Stewart’s recipe for years! It’s so simple to put together and we love the convenience of having it ready to go anytime. This recipe isn’t overly sweet but don’t skip the salt - it definitely helps bring out the sweetness and intensify the chocolate.

Martha Stewart Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups sugar

  • 2 1/4 cups cocoa powder

  • 1 TBS sea salt

  • whole milk for serving

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, combine sugar, cocoa, and salt, and whisk to combine well. Store the mixture in an airtight container.

  • For individual servings, pour 1 cup whole milk into a microwave-safe mug, and microwave on high just until hot. Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa mix, and stir to dissolve. For a larger batch of cocoa, warm the milk in a saucepan set over medium-low heat, taking care not to let the milk boil; as it warms, stir in 2 tablespoons of mix for each cup of milk.

Our subtle modifications:

We often replace some of the cane sugar with coconut sugar. Costco carries organic cane sugar in a large bag, and Azure Standard has awesome coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is slightly healthier because it has more minerals, antioxidants, and fiber.

We use 2 cups organic cane sugar, 1 1/2 cups organic coconut sugar.

An option is to run the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt through the vitamix to combine fully. This just creates a finer more uniform mix. Definitely not a must. Just be sure to shake your jar before using otherwise.

Store in an airtight container! I have a 1/2 cup measuring scoop that fits inside and is the perfect amount for 1 quart of milk (4 cups) of hot chocolate.

Use any milk you prefer. Whole milk is traditional. Goats milk is our preference because the protein is closest to human milk and easier to digest. We find this brand at Trader Joe’s. It’s non-homogenized and low heat pasteurized. We don’t do a lot of plant-based milks, but that would be an option. An oat and almond blend would probably taste best!
